The Academic Voice

Education that Works

Thanks! Tomorrow is last Day for this topic

Hello Colleagues,

I have been reading all your posts with great interest. and have taken them all to heart. You have all made cogent points and they have been considered in the process of making some NECESSARY changes in the hiring and credentialing process.
The current hiring process has been reviewed and changed accordingly. The new process will be presented to Faculty Council for further review and finalization.

Please Weigh in — Kojo

Again, I appreciate all those who have posted so far, please do continue to post. This is your opportunity to influence a process which impacts you and our students.

Comments to posts

Thanks to all those who have posted so far. All your points are very cogent and I appreciate them. I will leave this topic open for the whole of next week to allow for more comments from you. I will provide broad comments as opposed to responding to every post, if you don’t mind.
To respond to some of the questions/issues:
1. Some credentialing does depend on accreditiation and the college commissions, so a degree that is completely out of field would not suffice
2. I will post the credentialing guidelines as soon as I am able to
3. Not only is a discussion of the guidelines important, but the process is also.

Topic of the Week — Faculty Credentials and Hiring

Dear Faculty,

As we attempt to reinvent (improve academic quality) at the City Colleges, one issue that keeps coming up is the quality of our faculty. So, please weigh in on how you think the process of credentialing should work. Here is some food for thought:

  • Should we revamp the faculty credential guidelines?
    2011-12 CCC Credential Guidelines
  • Were faculty involved in the creation of these guidelines? Are you familiar with the guidelines?
  • Who should be ultimately responsible for credentialing faculty to teach?
  • Should we put together a task force to work on this? Could you recommend two people from each college?

In reference to hiring:

  • Have faculty been involved in the hiring process?
  • What role should District play in faculty hiring?
  • Where should final interviews be held?
  • Who should ultimately be responsible for hiring faculty?

Please grab the mic and let your voice be heard this week.

Greetings from the Provost and Chief Academic Officer

Greetings Faculty Members,

I hope you are all doing well and are  eagerly registering students for classes. Thanks so much to all of you who welcomed me so warmly to City Colleges at the Faculty Development Week events last week. I enjoyed interacting with you and listening to your concerns and suggestions on how to improve City Colleges. As I said during my opening remarks: you don’t know me and I don’t know you, but one thing I do know is that we are all on the same team. We all want the very best for City Colleges and our students and we all want to improve this institution and community.

As your Provost and Chief Academic officer (CAO) your opinions matter to me and I would like to hear them as we attempt to improve the various processes at CCC. In that light, I have created this blog to allow you to provide input on various topics to the Provost’s Office. Each week, I intend to post one or two topics for input and discussion. These topics could range anywhere from student recruitment to faculty hiring and credentialing. As you post, please be as candid and succinct as possible. Also please append your name to every post; no anonymous postings, please.  We want to hear your voice, but we also want to be able to recognize your voice so we can respond appropriately.

In addition to this blog, I will be visiting your various colleges and departments to meet with faculty and students on a regular basis. If you prefer to speak to me in person, please feel free to do so. You may also e-mail or call me directly anytime.

This is an opportunity for you to weigh in on decisions which impact you!! So let’s begin the process!!
